MARINE CORPS
1966-1968

John Powers was born in Cedar Rapids and grew up here. He graduated from Jefferson H.S., Kirkwood, and Mt. Mercy College. After high school he enlisted in the Marine Corps and was sent to Vietnam. While there he was wounded and received the Purple Heart. He returned to Cedar Rapids, where he married, and along with his wife, Janet, raised their three children. He eventually became involved with various Veterans groups and during his retirement years he dedicated much of his time and talents to Veteran's causes. He served on the Metro Veterans Council and on the Veteran Memorial Commission. But his favorite role was the time he spent helping with the Linn Co. "Stand Down", where he was known as the "food guy".
