1965-1967
Bernard “Bernie” Nachazel was born in Toledo, Iowa in 1943, the son of James and Ella Nachazel and grew up on a farm near Clutier, Iowa. He attended a one room country school through 7th grade and graduated from Clutier High School in 1961. After high school, Bernie attended Marshalltown Junior College and Iowa State University and graduated with an associate in arts degree in Electronics Technology. Bernie was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1965 and received his Basic Combat Training at Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo. After 4 months Artillery Survey training at Ft. Sill, Ok., he served for a year and a half at Hanau (near Frankfurt), Germany. All the training, travels, buddy friendships and more Bernie experienced during his time in the US Army had a great impact on his future. He has never regretted being drafted and is proud to have served his country. After his discharge from the Army and completing college, Bernie was hired as a technician by Northwestern Bell Telephone Company. Thirty-five years later, he retired from Qwest Communications. Retirement has been great. He spends a lot of his spare time working on some woodworking projects. He loves to share his creations with his family and, in particular, his grandchildren. Bernie is married, has 6 children and 13 grandchildren. Family is very important to him and he always looks forward to family get-togethers.
